Present knowledge of nutrition of Alaskan Natives is based on a comprehensive study completed in 1961. At that time, diets were unusual in several respects but no general inadequacies were found. Clinical experience has confirmed this overall adequacy of these diets, since nutritional disease in Alaskan Natives is rare.
At present, the needs in nutrition are 1) an updating of the earlier study to determine what changes in nutrition of Alaskan Natives may have occurred; 2) a study of nutrition of Natives in urban centers; and 3) a continuation of programs of nutrition education.
As well as one can predict now, no reason exists to anticipate[ate a significant increase in nutritional problems in the future in Alaskan Natives.
