Youth in Alaska's circumpolar north often migrate from rural areas in Alaska to urban centers to pursue post-secondary education. Retention rates of rural students lag behind their urban counterparts despite support services that aim to facilitate rural students' adjustment to college life in an urban environment. Stressors related to behavioral health and drinking style may contribute to the high rates of attrition in this population. This research examined the associations between rurality, alcohol use, and academic performance among students at a circumpolar university. Potential intervention strategies are proposed.
