Grief counseling of Native Americans should take into account the culturally related feelings of the client. Extreme emotional reactions to the death of a loved one may be worked out by the client's attendance at a ceremonial funeral. Some clients desire to return to the reservation for the funeral, or days of mourning may be observed. It is important to prevent interruptions in the grieving process and to provide the client with facts of the healing process, validation, and confrontation with the fact of the death. The mental health practitioner may be required to also play an advocate role in arranging for the funeral and other matters.
