The author proposes an alternative method for evaluating suicidal risk: defining a concept of imminent danger; evaluating risk based on a youth's past behavior and experiences; and having youth engage in five behavioral tasks which indicate an ability to cope with stressful situations in a manner inconsistent with suicidal behavior. Finally, the author outlines the staff training and community resources that are necessary to implement such an evaluation procedure for identifying suicidal youth.
