In 2002, the Alaska Legislature passed SJR44 which requests that state and federal agencies work together to develop a joint research and development plan to help expand and diversify Alaska's economy, strengthen and maintain state research institutions, and protect the health of Alaskans and the environment of Alaska. The University of Alaska (UA) is taking the lead in coordinating the development of the state's health and welfare research agenda. Over the next few months, the UA's Health Research Task Force will work with representatives of state and federal agencies to identify research priorities and to develop and present a plan to the Legislature. Planning efforts will focus on the greatest threats to the health and welfare of Alaskans, as well as other issues/areas that will attract the best researchers.
