A questionnaire was sent to 57 clinics where female sterilization was carried out. The number of tubal ligations performed during the period 1975-82 was stated and the number of pregnancies known following the sterilization was reported. Results include 35,599 sterilization procedures, which is virtually all of the tubal ligations occurring in Sweden during that period. 19,645 underwent laparoscopic procedures, 14,147 laparotomies, 642 with other methods, and 1165 with Hulka clips. After the operation, 211 pregnancies were recorded, resulting in a total pregnancy rate of 0.59%. For laparoscopic methods, the rate was 0.69%, for laparotomy 0.33%, for Hulka clips 1.80%, and for other methods, 1.09%. 12% of the pregnancies were ectopic. (author's modified)
