Active and hibernating Arctic ground squirrels were given doses of specific viral agents to determine the effect of hibernation on the retention of these agents in the intestinal tract of the animals. The agents administered included an Escherichia coli phage, and ECH0-6 and Coxsackie B-3 viruses. The results indicate that hibernation serves to extend the period of time during which the specific agents can be recovered from the animals.
