This report reviews the literature of the past 90 years concerned with the region of the brain from which originate nerve impulses that evoke shivering. Included are studies involving transection and ablation, electrolytic lesions, electrical stimulation and electrical recording. Problems arising from this literature are summarized and discussed in light of our recent work on prosencephalic modulation of shivering in the cat.
