This study is of the 49 villages of southwest Alaska served by the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC), which has grouped them into 11 units. The YKHC is the regional health corporation for them: those on or near the Kuskokwim River and its tributaries, from Quinhagak below its mouth to Lime Village on the western slopes of the Alaska Range, on the Stony River; those on Nelson Island and Nunivak Island; those on the Yukon River, from its mouth to Grayling, about 350 miles upriver. The Alaska Department of health and Social Services wanted this study to answer two questions: (1) What changes were there in accidental deaths and suicides in southwest Alaska comparing the second half of the 80s with the first half?; and (2) How reliable are the DHSS' Vital Statistics?
