Data from 101 Inupiaq Elders individuals living in two rural northwestern Alaska communities and in Anchorage were surveyed. Data were compared to reported data from Native Elders from American Indian Tribal Elders and older adults in the general US
population. Alaska Elders higher mental outlook was supported by higher SF-12 scores, reported fewer chronic diseases than reported by Elders from American Indian Tribes, but rates were similar to that in US NHANES except for Alaska???s higher reports of asthma and cancer. Inupiaq Elders reported fewer limitations in ADLs and IADLs than national surveys.
Alaska Elders reported higher food intake for most nutrients compared to NHANES and higher than Strong Heart data but had mean body mass index scores (BMI) appropriate for this age group. These measures confirm narrative statements gathered by the Center for Alaska Native Elders??? at the Conferences of Our Elders.
