Although elder abuse and neglect are not new problems, the dental profession is just now beginning to turn its attention to their research, detection, and prevention. Dentists are in an ideal position to diagnose and treat older patients who present with injuries to the head and neck area. This article provides information on the risk factors and indicators for elder abuse and neglect. Intervention strategies are suggested and community resources are listed. It is strongly recommended that mandatory family violence courses should be incorporated into the dental curriculum, and that dentists recognize the need for multi-disciplinary cooperation when dealing with mistreated older adults.
