A representative sample of Chukotka Natives (n=170) aged 25-64 and a similar sample of West Siberia residents (n=819) were studied by standardized methods and echocardiography. Acquired and congenital cardiac defects and anomalies were observed in Chukotka in 10% of cases, valvular prolapses in 25%, and three times less often in Novosibirsk. Myocardial scars were not found in Natives, whereas they were found in 1.4% in Siberia. The prevalence of atherosclerosis in the abdominal aorta and left coronary artery was from 8% to 11% in Chukotka. Left ventricular hypertrophy was observed two times more often in the Chukotka population than in the Siberian one. The results confirm the correlations between increased n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in membranes and increased myocardium mass in coastal Natives.
