Abstract
The Diffusion of Innovations Theory was applied to the historical development of educational telecommunications in Alaska to determine the role various factors play in the adoption and the history of telecommunications. Five stages for complete adoption are required. The stages include: awareness, interest, evaluation, trial, and adoption. Over a 20-year period, the developmental phases of educational telecommunications were divided as follows: the Pre-Learn Alaska Network Era: 1971-1981; the Learn Alaska Network: 1981-1986; the Post-Learn Alaska Network Era: 1986-1991. The objectives were: (a) to determine the factors that led to the implementation of educational telecommunications in Alaska; (b) to describe the various phases of educational telecommunications over a 20-year period; (c) to determine educational programming and marketing strategies; (d) to determine educational benefits to the citizens of Alaska; (e) to identify the factors that stopped the Learn Alaska Network's operation after five years; (f) to utilize the Diffusion of Innovations Theory to review the history in determining the role various factors play in the adoption and the history of educational telecommunications in Alaska. Now that the history of telecommunications in Alaska has been reviewed in relation to the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, the following predictions can be made: if state policy, administrative support, and funding is not provided, projects cannot become functional; if teacher education and training is not available, ownership and knowledge for utilizing the program is not understood; if funding is not made a part of the operating budget, the projects will not be long range; if the innovation meets the needs of the people to be served, the project will be utilized; if Alaska continues to have a "boom and bust" economy, little long-range growth and development will occur. Unless Alaska develops a budget based on a permanent fund rather than money that fluctuates with the price of oil, long-range growth and development is uncertain.

Abstract
Nowadays, the innovative activities are considered as the mechanism of implementation of public policy to increase effectiveness of public health system on the basis of achievements of modern medicine and technical sciences. The development, elaboration and implementation of products being in line with corresponding to criteria of innovation, promote the concurrency of medical institutions at the medical services market. The administrators of health departments and medical science professionals are to become aware about the problems of implementation of innovations into medical practice to develop the mechanisms of overcoming these issues.

Abstract
The article summarizes innovative activity in Omsk State Medical University (OSMU) and contains the review of innovative developments of staff of dental faculty of OSMU (a line of gels for caries prevetion, the DENTEST diagnostic unit, technology of tooth shape modular restoration, personified therapy.of patients with periodontal disease, caries diagnosis and periodontontal disease prognosis software, a set of the training materials on esthetic modeling of teeth, personification of clinical approaches in oral bioaesthetic rehabilitation, etc.). The analysis of the factors stimulating and complicating innovative detail in medical school, problems of introduction of medical innovations, lack of system of an assessment of medical technologies in Russia, regulations of the organization of innovative activity in medical schools is carried out, the prospects of their solution connected with decision-making at the state level are formulated.

Abstract
This patient safety initiative was implemented at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, a fully affiliated hospital of the University of Toronto that operates in-patient and outpatient facilities on five sites. A working group was created to engage the leaders and employees in defining and implementing our "ideal" safety culture. A subset of this group became the Research Team, mandated to do the "discovery work" with external groups and internal stakeholders to provide valuable input for designing the safety culture model. This involved identifying the key components required to support a safety culture, testing this model with findings from the academic literature and best in class organizations and identifying the who, what, when, where and how of each key component. Future activities will focus on the integration of safety into existing programs, initiatives and policies, seeking feedback from staff, patients and families, and evaluating the effectiveness of our intervention and the extent of the culture change.

Abstract
It seems almost unbelievable that, in this technological age, an industry could have a problem establishing an adequate system for efficient communication of information. However, the health care industry has exactly this problem. With health care decentralizing rapidly, access to information for community based health care professionals is extremely important. The current lack of easily accessible and pertinent information sometimes has tragic results that could be averted completely with the thoughtful and judicious application of present-day technologies.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to identify trends and new technological developments that appear due to an ageing society and to relate them to current research in the field of medical informatics. A survey of the current literature reveals that recent technological advances have been made in the fields of "telecare and home-monitoring", "smart homes and robotics" and "health information systems and knowledge management". Innovative technologies such as wearable devices, bio- and environmental sensors and mobile, humanoid robots do already exist and ambient assistant living environments are being created for an ageing society. However, those technologies have to be adapted to older people's self-care processes and coping strategies, and to support new ways of healthcare delivery. Medical informatics can support this process by providing the necessary information infrastructure, contribute to standardisation, interoperability and security issues and provide modelling and simulation techniques for educational purposes. Research fields of increasing importance with regard to an ageing society are, moreover, the fields of knowledge management, ubiquitous computing and human-computer interaction.

Abstract
To describe registered nurses' reported use of research in the care of older people and to examine associations between research use and factors related to the elements: the communication channels, the adopter and the social system.
Research use among registered nurses working in hospital settings has been reported in many studies. Few studies, however, have explored the use of research among registered nurses working in the care of older people.
A cross-sectional survey.
In eight municipalities, all registered nurses (n = 210) working in older people care were invited to participate (response rate 67%). The Research Utilisation Questionnaire was adopted. Questions concerning the work organisation and research-related resources were sent to the Community Chief Nurse at each municipality. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were applied.
The registered nurses reported a relatively low use of research findings in daily practice, despite reporting a positive attitude to research. The registered nurses reported lack of access to research reports at the work place and that they had little support from unit managers and colleagues. Registered nurses working in municipalities with access to research-related resources reported more use of research than registered nurses without resources. The factors 'Access to research findings at work place', 'Positive attitudes to research' and 'Nursing programme at university level' were significantly associated with research use.
There is a great potential to increase registered nurses' use of research findings in the care of older people. Factors which were linked to the communication channels and the adopter were associated with research use.
Strategies to enhance research use should focus on access to and adequate training in using information sources, increased knowledge on research methodology and nursing science and a supportive organisation.
